History of Our School
Scoil Mhuire was built in 1932 by the Sisters of Mercy. Prior to 1932 the children of Rosslare were educated in a private school run by the sisters situated between the church and the convent. In 1932 the school consisted of three rooms with sliding partitioned walls between each classroom. There were two cloakrooms or roberies as they were called in the early days. Each classroom was heated by a coal fire. Another classroom still remained in the old school across the road.
In 1966 a new classroom was added on at the northern end. This was to be the new infant room. In 1973 the school was again extended, with three new classrooms being built. These replaced the original classrooms built in 1932, which were turned into a new general purpose room and library. Funding for the library was provided by a Trust set up by the terms of the estate of the late Dr. Desmond Ffrench, the local doctor in Rosslare for many years. The school still benefits from this Trust. A kitchen and staff room were built also and the old shelter to the back of the school was walled in and turned into a lunchroom, and in later years, an art room.
Once again, because of increased numbers, two more classrooms had to be added, plus a strong room and equipment room in 1984.
This brought the total teaching staff to six, however, due to the decreasing size of the family unit, enrolments dropped and the teaching staff was reduced to five in 1988.
As Scoil Mhuire is a Mercy Convent School the principal has always been a sister, and there has always been religious on the staff.
Due to decreased numbers in vocations, their numbers have declined within the school also and in 1991 the first lay principal was appointed. The Sisters continue to be involved in the school.
As there was now a vacant classroom in the school a decision was taken to establish a local history museum. Many artefacts were donated and the James Stevens room was opened in Feb 1992. This room was also the learning support room. Following the appointment of a sixth assistant teacher in 2006 the room housing the museum had to revert back to use as a classroom. The art room was refurbished and the learning support teacher and the museum are re-located there.
